An important public transit company of the greater Montreal area wanted to improve communications with its passengers by sharing information in real time inside bus shelters. To achieve this goal, it needed a user-friendly passenger information system that could integrate updates in real time, while being compatible with different display technologies and able to ensure energy-efficient operations in exterior environments.
ITEStransit, a cloud-based passenger information system, became the central structure of the communication network. Through its personalized transit templates, ITEStransit integrates web pages and GTFS transit data from the transit network in a transparent manner in a section of each template while displaying updates in real time (such as schedules, waiting times and messages to users).
To meet many different communication needs, ITEStransit fuels display networks using four separate technologies:
Installed in bus shelters, these screens powered by Windows-based media players are connected via cellular technology using a private APN. This system ensures stable and real-time communication.
These displays integrate Android-based players, are powered through solar panels and batteries, and provide a durable solution for bus shelters. They are also connected through cellular technology using a private APN.
Solar-powered and working with Linux, these energy-efficient displays provide reliable information with a small ecological footprint. These displays are connected through cellular technology using a private APN.
LCD displays installed in terminals are powered by SoC technology and are connected through Ethernet. The two display models installed in this network’s terminals are LG webOS and Samsung Smart Signage Platform (SSSP).
ITEStransit helps this transit company efficiently manage its multi-platform display network. The flexibility offered by the passenger information system provides real-time, reliable and energy-efficient information in all bus shelters.
Furthermore, the permission and access control module based on the ITEStransit roles allows it to manage its network in a centralized manner while granting specific access levels to various team members depending on their needs. This streamlined approach ensures consistent communications and operational efficiency.
The transit system significantly improved its communications with passengers thanks to ITEStransit. The passenger information display system helps manage a multi-platform display network in a centralized and efficient manner, and ensures real-time information is reliably and ecologically shared in all bus shelters. This solution improves the passenger experience while ensuring the network meets its commitment towards innovation, sustainability, and operational performance.
